THInK - Transforming Healthcare with Innovation and Knowledge Sharing
The Current State
Healthcare reform and the current societal focus on healthcare transformation provide a burning platform for change. Innovation and excellence silos permeate the industry; which are thought to be a central problem in the structure of the healthcare industry. Hospital programs develop particular expertise that remains localized and hinders industry performance improvement due to a lack of reasonable measures or mechanisms to deploy innovation or best practices. Industry develops and deploys solutions without connection to the practical aspects of delivery across physician specialty and delivery continuum, and is caught in a commoditization vs. Research & Development environment and its related demands. The cost to bring about innovation is high and the course to do so is slow. Collaboration and the application of expertise across the industry silos based on a shared vision of brilliance in a performance-based paradigm, for the purpose of creating healthcare value for patients, will improve the collective industry’s performance. Collective performance improvement can permeate the industry if the collaboration has a platform to do so, and THInK provides both the structure and the platform to achieve these critical outcomes.
The THInK Vision
THInK is cardiovascular performance creation initiative. It is a collaborative between hospitals, clinics, private practices, physicians, scientific associations and industry partners working from different perspectives to solve the same cardiovascular problems. The purpose of THInK is to transform the healthcare industry clinically, operationally and financially by leveraging the expertise of its multiple collaborative partners and deploying advanced problem solving methodologies to define performance excellence in cardiovascular environments and across cardiovascular disease states.THInK-TANKS
Collaboration efforts are focused on THInK-TANKS, which are problem solving units focused on specific cardiovascular environments and the patients that are served there. The catheterization lab, the electrophysiology lab or the hybrid operating room are all examples of THInK-TANKS. THInK-TANKS are also organized around particular diseases or diagnoses, such as atrial fibrillation, heart failure and valvular disease. Content and cadence of the work are determined by the THInK-TANK participants, however, each THInK-TANK addresses its relevant components such as innovative clinical development, clinical quality, patient selection, appropriateness criteria, profitability, cost per service, billing and coding, operations and thru put, access and care coordination, and patient, physician and staff satisfaction. By examining data determined to be indicative of performance relative to each THInK-TANK area, sharing experiences, ideas and “secret sauce” and initiating collective performance improvement initiatives, participant performance is optimized and best practices are established.THInK-TANKS are created by joining a dedicated facilitation team with 8-10 selected programs, associated scientific associations and industry partners, and establishing and then examining operations, financial, quality/outcomes, service, and satisfaction metrics. After establishing the metrics and benchmarking results against the participant field, variances in performance are explored. Sometime following the initial benchmarking, additional cardiovascular programs are invited into the THInk-TANK as a member and participant in the benchmarking and performance improvement effort, thereby expanding the influence and creating a collaborative community focused on continuous value improvement.
Some activities of THInK-TANK members include:
- Onsite visits to tour, analyze, and review performance
- Participation in benchmarking initiatives
- Regular conference calls and meetings to discuss the development of activities and strategies
- Best practice discovery, definition, and ways to optimize / leverage the knowledge gained
- Sharing of success stories and learning experiences
- Participation in a professional networking portal and the “Just-THInKing” blog
